As part of Anuga's supporting programme, the Federal Association of the German Retail Grocery Trade (BVL) is conducting a seminar called ‘Sustainable Saltwater Fish and Environmentally Compatible Aquaculture’. The seminar is being held at Koelnmesse in Cologne today (10 October). Speakers from the fields of science, the retail trade, the fishing industry and certification and environmental organisations will present ways and means of organising the process of buying fish from sustainable sources and environmentally friendly aquaculture.
After a word of greeting from BVL President Friedhelm Dornseifer, introductory presentations and keynote speeches will be held by Dr Matthias Keller (Fish Information Centre), Dr Christopher Zimmermann and Dr Reinhold Hanel (experts on saltwater fish and aquaculture from the federal research institute vTI). These talks will be followed by a panel discussion of current initiatives. The participants will include representatives of organisations occupying various points along the value chain.
The initiatives of the food trade and the fishing industry include the continued expansion of the database ‘Fischbestände online’ (Fish stocks online), which provides specific information on the current assessment of saltwater fish stocks. In order to ensure the environmentally friendly production of fish from aquaculture in the producing countries, the food trade and the fishing industry are increasingly relying on international certification systems.
