SA’s multi award-winning R&B and gospel singer, Loyiso Bala, has been appointed as Fairtrade Label South Africa’s very first ambassador. He met with Deon Boshoff, cellarmaster of Place in the Sun Wines at a Devon Valley farm, to see for himself where the grapes are harvested for the Fairtrade-accredited wines.
Bala also met some of the farm’s top farmworkers and presented each with a signed copy of his latest album.
Place in the Sun wines are made from grapes sourced from vineyards certified by FLO-CERT under the Fair Label Organisation (FLO) Standards that forms part of Fairtrade. Growers are paid a premium for their grapes that goes towards social development of the farm workers, who get to decide on how the funds are to be spent. Currently, these are being spent on early-learning, tuition and school uniforms for farmworker’s children; sporting activities; and a vegetable garden.
