Making low fat spreads has until now been a difficult job due to the risks of water separation and poor mouthfeel. However, by using the right combination of emulsifiers and by carefully testing the production parameters, Palsgaard makes it possible to make low fat spreads with only 10 per fat.
Finalists in the Sime Darby Hudson & Knight Baking Masters competition gathered at the South African Chefs Association’s (SACA) Centre for Culinary Excellence on 29 September for the final competition cook-off. The competition, with Student, Professional and Team categories, challenged chefs to create a baked dish using Hudson & Knight’s popular baking fats Pastrex and Mastercraft.
The Malaysia-Africa Palm Oil Trade Fair and Seminar 2011 (POTS) took place at the Sandton Convention Centre, in Johannesburg, on the 7 December.
The objectives of POTS is to generate greater awareness of the nutritional benefits and advantages of palm oil for food and non-food industries; to establish, renew and widen contacts with the fats and oils industry in Africa; and to provide a conducive platform for interaction between members of the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) and the African region.

The Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) hosted the first Malaysian-African Palm Oil Trade Fair and Seminar (POTS) in December 2011 at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. The Department of Health ruled that as from the 17th August 2011, the sale, manufacture or importing of foodstuffs containing partially hydrogenated fats and oils will be prohibited. According to the Department, all food products can only contain less than two grams non-ruminant trans-fats (or industrially manufactured trans-fats) per 100 grams of fat.
