Fifteen companies are featured on the South African Pavilion, sponsored by the Department of Trade and Industry (dti), at SIAL 2012, behind held in Paris, France from 21-25 October. Gordon Gleimius, deputy director of Export Promotion of Trade and Investment South Africa (TISA), says the dti has been exhibiting at SIAL for a number of years. ‘When something works, we continue doing it,’ he explains. ‘SIAL is one of the biggest food shows, and gives SA companies the opportunity to meet buyers from around the world in five days. We have brought these companies exhibiting at SIAL under the National Pavilion Scheme, which is a major component of the EMIA (Export Market Investment Assistance) Scheme.’

Dynamic Commodities have done it again; this year winning the SIAL D’Or 2012 Best Product for South Africa for So shi, a fruity sushi sorbet. Based on the concept of the popular Japanese delicacy, sushi, the innovative product of Mannie Martiz – ‘and many others,’ he contends – is made with frozen fruit sorbet.

There is still enough food on the planet to feed everyone, yet one billion do not have access to sufficient and go to bed hungry every night. Obesity and diabetes grow, and 40 per cent of school going children in South Africa are severely malnourished. It is said that, every day, so many children die due to lack of food; they would fill seven jumbo jets. Something is seriously wrong with this picture and it is obvious that we need to address this. This is what World Food Day and the International Day for Eradicating Poverty, on 16 and 17 October respectively, focus attention on.

Created in 1986, the illustrious awards reward innovations that have become major retail successes in their national food markets. This year recognises the top entrants from 29 participating countries, bestowing the global 2012 SIAL d’OR award on Selfish trout with herb butter from Hungary (a non-dairy product category winner). The fish is served in a vacuum bag, ready to cook in the oven, without having to open the bag. The packaging also extends the shelf life of the product. So shi from Dynamic Commodities in Port Elizabeth won the top spot as the Best Product from South Africa.

16 October 2012 marks the annual World Food Day, which raises awareness and understanding of approaches to ending hunger. The role of cooperatives in improving food security and contributing to the eradication of hunger is this year’s theme, announced by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
