SA Food Review beat the competition to bring you unprecedented media coverage from the first World Congress of Food Science and Technology to be held in Africa.
Our team covered all the main speeches, news, announcements and events for a daily newsletter over the five-day event and rolling updates for our website.
We even beat Business Day to a significant presentation by Sir David King, former Chief Scientific Advisor to the UK government, on how the food scientific community is being challenged to produce more food for a growing population amid threats like global warming.
The Food Review stand, displaying the exciting food innovations chosen as finalists in our New Product Competition, was a popular calling point with trade people eager to see the products or just catch up on news and gossip.
The main themes of the congress were food safety, food security, the environment and education – issues being faced by the whole industry globally, said outgoing SAAFoST president Rosie Maguire. She was replaced by Gunnar Sigge, lecturer and departmental chair at Stellenbosch University, after the congress.
“2010 is Africa’s year”, declared Maguire. “The event we have been working towards is here. South Africa, our time is now.”
The 15th IUFoST, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, featured 79 countries, 220 presentations and 1752 delegates.
IUFoST president Geoffrey Campbell-Platt said it was fitting the first such event in Africa was held during the 50th anniversary of the launch of SAAFoST.
