Winner takes all at this year's SAAFoST Student Day

Gabatshoane Madisa, a third year food science student at the University of Johannesburg, took home all three prizes in her category at this year's Student Day.

Eighteen third year food science students from the University of Johannesburg, showcased their product development projects at the SAAFoST Student Day. They had the opportunity to win Best Display, Best Scientific Content, Best for Commercial Development, each worth R500, or the overall prize, worth R1 000.

This year saw one student take it all with her outstanding product, Beef-Up, a fortified beef stock cube developed for lower income brackets in SA. She says, 'You must know your market, it's the most important aspect in product development.'

The beef stock cube is fortified with iron and other functional ingredients. She also designed packaging specific to her target market. 'You can buy one cube from a spaza shop,' she says.

With products as good as these coming out of this year's Student Day, the future of the South African food industry looks bright.
