Burchells Foods has received the prestigious FSSC 22000:2011 food safety and quality certification from ProCert in Switzerland. The company sees it as a massive achievement as only a few South African countries have received this certification to date.
The certification should enable Burchells Foods to continue to supply high quality private label products to its local customer base, which has been supplied by Burchells Foods for the past 13 years. It believes the certification should add more credibility to its international Gourmet Africa brand which is distributed world-wide.
‘Our products must rise above the norm, not only exceed the local benchmark but also meet the best and toughest of International Standards,’ according to director Debbie Alcock. ‘It gives us great pleasure that our private label products and the Gourmet Africa range meet the very highest standard of credibility. These products from Africa must undisputedly be products to reckon with.’
The Gourmet Africa brand was created when Alcock, and her chef husband Tim Alcock recognized the need for uniquely African dishes in the international market. The Alcocks went to explore the continent’s offerings and developed the range of convenient and authentic regional dishes accordingly.
‘There is a big move into Africa, but very few people really know what the authentic food tastes like – let alone the differences between each country,’ explains Debbie Alcock.
‘At one time, anything coming from Africa was viewed with suspicion, which is not surprising, as there are few HACCP regulations to be adhered to. This is why we were absolutely determined to be certified for FFSC 22000:2011,’ she explains.
Burchells Foods quality assurance manager, Reana Cloete says attaining the certification means the company can assure customers and consumers that it is dedicated to delivering a safe product.
