The businesses that make up the Spec Group are Spec Tool & Die, Spec Design and Spec Molders. These will also become part of RPC Astrapak.

The group’s three main shareholders, Dave Murgatroyd, Kenny Moore and Leanne Suarez will stay on along with the rest of their teams.

Spec Group was carefully selected for this acquisition. This was based on its prowess and industry-leading track record as an independent and innovative tool room through Spec Tool & Die and Spec Design.

Its reputation is proven by an immensely successful partnership demonstrated through its award-winning innovative designs achieved in conjunction with RPC Astrapak prior to this deal.

The Durban based company, established in 1991, is a household name. It specialises in the design, manufacture and repair of plastic moulding tools and dies. The group branched out into manufacturing with the establishment of Spec Molders in 2004.

Spec Molders brings exciting new products and customers to RPC Astrapak.

‘Buying the business gives us a good moulding business. More importantly, it provides our own in-house design and mould-making capabilities along with a very experienced management and manufacturing team. Not only will we be investing in the business to improve its capacity and capability. We will also create a dedicated Innovation and Design Centre for RPC Astrapak. We will be linking it up with RPC’s global network of 32 similar facilities to bring the group’s innovation, engineering and expertise to the South African market. This will also be brought to the African market as our expansion plans evolve. This is particularly exciting as RPC is a global leader in all plastic conversion technologies. This investment will allow our customers to access RPC through RPC Astrapak,’ says Robin Moore, RPC Astrapak’s chief executive.

Noting the importance of the synergy with RPC, Moore says the company has been successful because of its track record of innovation and speed to market using world-class technology.

‘RPC Astrapak is now in a position to access and emulate.’

Dave Murgatroyd, founder and owner of Spec Tool & Die says the foundation built will be used to build great value within RPC Astrapak.

The company is constantly striving to offer more efficient and effective solutions to its customers.
