As part of its CSR programme, Debonairs Pizza has rolled out Dough Nation. By following the stipulated method to produce the perfect pizza, a ball of dough is flattened over a template and trimmed. Usually, the off-cuts were discarded, but after some research – particularly into food safety – the company realised that the left-over dough could be turned into healthy, nutritious buns. ‘Pizza dough is quite stodgy, so it’s tummy-filling,’ explains André Piehl, managing executive of Debonairs Pizza. The buns are distributed predominantly by a foundation that works with various communities around South Africa. ‘We do urge our franchisees in areas that are not covered by the foundation to distribute to a charity of their choice, such as an orphanage or old age home. There are a lot of hungry mouths to feed.’
