Envirocore’s sustainable packaging

Mr Sweet composite cansWhen looking at food that has been wasted, it is easy to understand that well-designed packaging plays an important role in protecting consumables throughout the value chain. The carton and board packaging sector has a duty to respond to the needs and demands of its customers in the food and beverage industry. We unpack some of the latest innovations in the sector.

When Envirocore Composites started operation in 1992; its main line of business was the recovery and recycling of paper cores. In 2007 the company expanded into the composite packaging industry. Owned by mother and daughter duo, Caron Green and Margaret Krishnasamy, the Boksburg-based company creates sustainable packaging for designer brands and luxury labels including those in the food, wine and spirits markets.

Composite cans construction

Composite packaging cans are cylindrical containers, which can be constructed of several layers of paper. The materials used for making these cans are board, polymer barriers and paper. ‘Each composite can is spiral wound. It is constructed by diagonally winding and gluing a number of layers of paperboard together,’ Green explains. The top and bottom closures are made of metal or plastic. ‘The bottom layer of the can comprises either foil or bay white paper while two layers in the middle are paperboard. This gives the can its structure. The middle layers usually comprise recycled natural board,’ Green says. The outer layer label wraps around the package. Graphics appear without interruption. The label is printed to customer specification and can be finished with either a high gloss or matte lamination. It can also be embossed or foiled.

Eye-catching packaging

Composites decorated with labels in vibrant colours and graphics provide a sustainable alternative to plastic containers and flexible plastic pouches for many consumer products,’ Green highlights. She asserts that retailers favour the small shelf space circular containers use, adding that its eye-catching graphics consisting of full colour labels draws increased consumer attention. The advantages of the product are as follows:

  • hygienic

  • environmentally friendly

  • provides maximum shelf life

  • extremely convenient to use
