Napier Vineyards celebrates major triumph

Napier Vineyards, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Bingen-based Reh Kendermann winery, scored multiple successes at this year’s National Wine Challenge South Africa. Six wines from the premium and basic range impressed the jury, with the flagship Red Medallion once again making it into the Top 100 South African wines.

It rained medals over Wellington as the South African winery Napier Vineyards celebrated six awards at the National Wine Challenge 2018. Winemaker Leon Bester and his team enjoyed a particularly special achievement with their premium Bordeaux blend Red Medallion. After the 2012 vintage received ‘Double Platinum’ at last year’s National Wine Challenge, securing it a place in the Top 100 South African wines, the 2013 vintage was able to replicate this great success. ‘We are particularly proud to be among the top 100 winners of the National Wine Challenge for the second time in a row with our flagship wine Red Medallion. This distinction motivates us to continue producing such extraordinary wine-drinking experiences,’ says Leon Bester, winemaker and managing director at Napier Vineyards.

Napier receives national and international awards

Five other wines from the South African range, part of Reh Kendermann since April 2017, received awards at the gala in Spier (Stellenbosch): From the basic range of Lion Creek wines, the Chenin Blanc Sauvignon Blanc (2017) won ‘Double Gold’, while the Cabernet Sauvignon (2015) and the Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz (2016) each snapped up ‘Double Silver’. Two wines from the premium range also achieved ‘Double Silver’ – the Napier Saint Catherine Single Vineyard Chardonnay (2016) and the Napier Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (2014). ‘These awards are a testament to our excellent work and confirm the enormous quality and potential of our South African wines,’ says Alexander Rittlinger, managing director of Napier Vineyards and Reh Kendermann. ‘I am delighted that our wines regularly impress at national competitions and international tastings.’

More than 600 wines sampled

At the National Wine Challenge/Top 100 South Africa, convened by Robin von Holdt’s, the jury samples several hundred wines each year. This year, winemakers submitted more than 600 wines. The experts award the accolades ‘Grand Cru 1st Place’, ‘Double Platinum’, ‘Double Gold’ and ‘Double Silver’ and select the best 100 wines in South Africa.
