Tetra Pak, the global leader in food processing and packaging that has been in South Africa for 60 years, provides food and drink packaging and processing technologies that meet the demands of a broad spectrum of socio-economic needs to countries across southern Africa

‘The packaging industry is going through fundamental changes driven by sustainability and digitalisation,’ says Stefan Fageräng, MD of Tetra Pak Southern Africa. ‘Our packages include fully renewable, bio-based and recyclable solutions and today we are digitalising these solutions from end-to-end. We have a unique offering covering digital solutions, such as Tetra Plant Master and the newer Plant Secure, which gives us the opportunity to reduce costs and improve efficiencies for companies that work with us.’

Tetra Pak is driving to achieve 100 per cent recyclability of its entire carton pack range by 2030, as well as increasing the use of renewable materials, which have the potential to be fully circular and climate neutral.

Among the sustainable technologies it will showcase are the bio-based packages that come from FSC-certified and controlled sources with traceable origins. The products are also increasingly developed with recyclability in mind to foster downstream reuse. Tetra Pak will also showcase technologies that help customers reduce water and energy use, carbon emissions, and food and packaging waste.

Tetra Pak Plant Secure is a plant management service that delivers profitability improvements for customers. It’s a total plant management service that begins with a detailed audit of all the equipment and systems across the customer’s value chain. Plant Secure’s model is based on tried and tested methodologies that result in shared risk and guaranteed outcomes. Tetra Pak’s payment is linked to business results and contracts are offered with quantified targets on sustainable operational expenditure reduction and capital expenditure optimisation.

Pilot projects have been conducted in the Americas and Europe. An Americas-based dairy operation cut operating costs by more than 10 per cent in the first year. Plant Secure is available to be rolled out to all Tetra Pak food and beverage customers worldwide.
