October 16 marks World Food Day, a global event dedicated to raising awareness of food’s importance—not only as sustenance but also as a fundamental human right and a key part of cultural identity.

The hospitality industry plays an active and responsible role in addressing food insecurity and promoting sustainable practices, such as local sourcing and waste reduction. “World Food Day reminds me of how crucial it is to build food systems that are fair, sustainable, and nourishing,” says Preshan Pillay, food and beverage manager at Time Square. “It’s a chance to reflect on how fortunate we are to have access to meals and how we can help those who don’t by reducing waste, supporting local producers, and practicing mindful eating.”

How the hospitality industry celebrates World Food Day

Hospitality businesses have a variety of ways to participate in World Food Day, including:

  • Donating surplus food to communities in need.
  • Hosting food drives and partnering with hunger-relief organisations.
  • Featuring local and sustainable ingredients in special menus to promote awareness.
  • Educating staff and guests about healthy diets and food sustainability.

At Time Square, for example, sustainability is more than a one-day practice. The team highlights local ingredients on their menus, collaborates with small producers, and actively reduces food waste through corporate initiatives.

The role of local sourcing and sustainability

Sun International’s procurement teams actively source ingredients from small businesses and local producers, not only boosting their economies but also offering fresher, more authentic meals for their guests. To celebrate World Food Day, Time Square is featuring a “Local Heroes” menu, showcasing these meaningful partnerships.

“Supporting local and sustainable food systems benefits our community, our guests, and the environment,” explains Pillay. “It reduces our carbon footprint, strengthens our local economy, and gives our diners incredible, flavourful meals.

Beyond these immediate benefits, sustainability serves as a pillar of Time Square’s values – one that strengthens the brand while paving a path to a better future.

Sustainability is essential

Preshan Pillay affirms, “The food industry has a significant environmental impact, and leading responsibly is essential. Reducing waste, saving water, ethical sourcing, and educating our teams and guests aren’t optional – they’re requirements for being future-ready.”

This commitment means that guests enjoy more than just great meals – they also support ethical and sustainable practices by choosing Time Square’s dining outlets.

A call to action for World Food Day

World Food Day offers an invitation for the hospitality industry to lead in creating sustainable, equitable food systems. From celebrating local producers to reducing food waste, every action adds up to make a difference.

As we commemorate this important day, join Time Square in taking steps toward an eco-friendly food future. Mindful practices don’t just elevate brands; they support communities, nourish guests, and protect the planet.
